Movement Disorders Section
The movement disorder group
had a very successful section
meeting at SLEEP 2011. As a
preliminary to the business
meeting we chose four abstracts
from junior investigators to
be presented including that of
2011 Section Investigator Award
winner, Lynn Marie Trotti. All
of these abstracts addressed
the emerging connections
between restless legs syndrome
(RLS) and cardiovascular
disease, hypertension and
stroke. A senior investigator
then summarized this area of
investigation. We have already
chosen this year’s winner to be
announced. During the year that
ensued, amongst other things,
our steering committee made
recommendations to the AASM
Board of Directors through the
Membership Sections Committee
(MSC) regarding a possible
name change for restless legs
syndrome. We recommended
several submissions for courses,
symposia, workshops and
discussion groups for SLEEP
2012 to the Program Committee
and are happy with acceptance
of a reasonable number of the
proposals. We are happy that
most of the members of our
steering committee were chosen
to participate in the revision
of the Movement Disorder
section of the upcoming
ICSD-3
,
an independent but related
function. We have had the same
steering committee for three
years—Art Walters,
Chair
,
Norma Cuellar,
Vice-Chair
,
Steve Duntley, Marco Zucconi
and Denise Sharon. Norma
Cuellar has represented the
Movement Disorder Group at
most of the meetings of the MSC
and has played an active role
in evaluating the survey of the
membership regarding the role
of sections. Thanks to Norma!
Movement Disorders is the
primary section for 123 AASM
members and a secondary
section for 702 AASM members.
